The-man-on-the-ledge theme has been used in movies and on TV so often over the years that it has surely reached cliche status by now.

Director Henry Hathaway, however, in FOURTEEN HOURS (1951) guides the drama and urban tensions with such sure-handed craftsmanship, that this ledge jumper based film has remained almost as powerfully involving and suspenseful today as it was 55 years ago.

Furthermore, Hathaway gives FOURTEEN HOURS a master’s touch by utilizing his own established and innovative semidocumentary style (see THE HOUSE ON 92nd STREET (1945); KISS OF DEATH (1947)). Thus, FOURTEEN HOURS, with its low-keyed black-and-white cinematography, effectively captures a segment of Manhattan’s dramatically restless urban world in moody noir fashion.

And in addition, strong performances abound.

Especially noteworthy is Richard Basehart (the cause of all the commotion) as the disturbed 14hr. ledge occupant way way up on the fifteenth floor of a Manhattan hotel on St. Patrick’s Day. (Actually, all this is based on a true incident; the film realistically depicts the sensationalistic media frenzy surrounding the event, with news-starved reporters everywhere, and some crude, insensitive behavior by numerous spectators).

Paul Douglas likewise shines in his role as a traffic cop who tries to keep Basehart from jumping.

Also, Barbara Bel Geddes is impressive (and eloquently gentle) as Basehart’s former fiancee.

The many-faceted spectator emotions (some quite strong) on the street and surroundings set other little dramas in motion.

Here even Grace Kelly makes her film debut, as a maritally unhappy spectator observing and reacting to Basehart’s plight above. Debra Paget and Jeffrey Hunter are also nearby.

By all means, add this fascinating and strongly fatalistic noir to your collection. Here are 5 stars to welcome its DVD appearance in such excellent condition.

This cinema-verite account of a man hovering on the ledge of a high story New York hotel works on all cylinders. Director Henry Hathaway masterfully weaves all the threads of the ensuing circus flawlessly. From the police operation, the media hordes, the curiousity seekers on the ground, and ultimately to the scenes on the ledge we are kept enthralled throughout. The film that this one brought to my mind is “Dog Day Afternoon” in it’s portrayal of a media circus. For this type of film to work there has to be a certain suspension of disbelief. Despite the presence of some well known actors(Paul Douglas, Richard Basehart, Agnes Moorehead, Barbara Bel Geddes, et al) we are so caught up in the emotions of the events that we are led to believe them as real people. Film is also of interest for some up-and-coming actors who blend seemlessly into the fabric of the film(Grace Kelly, Jeffrey Hunter, Ossie Davis, Harvey Lembeck). “Fourteen Hours” definitely rates as an unqualified success.

Our two-year old loves all things Elmo but this DVD stands out among all of the others.

It contains three episodes of “Elmo’s World”. Each episode follows a similar flow of events while covering different topics: dancing, books and music. Each episode contains

* funny skits (Our son always laughs at the misadventures of Mr. Noodle. In case you have a preference, all three episodes on this DVD have the “original” Mr. Noodle played by Bill Irwin rather than the newer one played by the late Michael Jeter)

* songs and counting exercises that encourage active participation (he mimics the hokey pokey and points to the counting objects as they appear on the screen)

* instructional live-action video clips. For example, the “Reading” episode has a clip on the basics of how the library works and encourages kids to have their parents take them there. This will obviously be lost on younger toddlers, but shows how the content will be interesting to a wide variety of ages.

The episode format is great for younger toddlers because they can key in on what type of skit or song is upcoming after only a few viewings. Other Elmo DVDs (i.e. “The Best of Elmo”) don’t follow this pattern, and so he’s not as interested in them at this young age; those DVDs function more as sing-alongs for older toddlers.

I disagree with some of the other negative reviews based on the disc’s inability to hold a toddler’s complete attention for the whole hour. First off, I doubt that there’s anything in the world that could hold a two-year old’s complete attention for more than ten minutes. Second, I believe that programs like this one are most beneficial when your child enjoys its content interactively along with others. We love watching this DVD along with him and he loves showing off how he can dance along with it and point out and name specific objects.

Another criticism that I’ve seen stems from the commercials that are at the very beginning of the main program. You can skip past these trailers for other Sesame Street DVDs just by advancing to the next chapter. One button – not hard at all.

In summary, this DVD has great educational content for kids within a wide range of ages and it’s very entertaining as well.

My daughter, 17 months, has been a Sesame Street fan for about 3 months now. No matter what she’s doing, she stops cold as soon as the Elmo’s World theme music starts! Now, if we’re ever out and unable to catch the day’s episode of Sesame Street, she never has to go without Elmo’s World! What’s great about this video (and the 3 other volumes that have since come out!) is that it contains 3 complete episodes of Elmo’s World! You can either really treat your child, and let them watch all 3 (heaven on earth, in their minds), or “ration” them out, one at a time, if you just need 15 minutes to get dinner on, relax (what’s that?), or whatever. If your little one needs that Elmo “fix”, get this video, and all the other Elmo’s World videos! They’re well worth the money!

After a string of movies residence in Europe, Woody Allen triumphantly returns to his beloved Current York for Whatever Works. Since Allen releases a modern film each year, it’s hit-or-miss with him (rightfully so) . This film got less-than-enthusiastic reviews and, as such, I wasn’t expecting considerable from it…But the critics really misrepresented this film, as this is one of Woody’s best comedies.

Larry David (of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame) plays Boris Yellnikoff, a caustic, retired physicist who walks with a limp due to a failed suicide attempt. Now, Boris teaches chess to “zombie-minded imbeciles.” Evan Rachel Wood plays Melodie, a naïve runaway from Mississippi, who stumbles into Boris’ life…Against all odds, the two marry and Melodie’s parents (played wonderfully by Patricia Clarkson and Ed Begley, Jr.) both, separately, derive her.

I’m not familiar with Larry David’s previous work, so I don’t know how mighty of this performance carries over from his contain persona; but David is playing the Woody Allen role here to perfection. David perfectly captures the neurotic, arrogant genius that is Boris and recites Allen’s dialogue as if it comes straight from his fill thoughts. Of course, this is a film filled with mammoth performances as can be expected from a film by Woody Allen. Begley, Jr. is particularly surprising as Melodie’s father…And while some may not be too impressed by Wood’s performance as Melodie, she’s very convincing and cute.

This is truthfully one of Allen’s best comedies and an all-around substantial film. The dialogue here is typical, philosophical, sarcastic Allen…But it doesn’t fair elicit chuckles, but full-on, laugh-out-loud laughter. It’s a very knowing film that not ONLY ranks as one of Allen’s best comedies, but one of his best films. I don’t look how this film has not received the amount of praise it deserves, because I clearly saw something all the critic’s didn’t. While the past few years have shown a return to beget for Allen, this film stands as a terrific achievement in the Allen catalogue. It’s quite honestly one of the best films I’ve seen this year and it’s not to be missed.

GRADE: A

I will infamous this film in my top five Woody Allen films which include: Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters, Interiors,

and Sleeper.

Laughed out loud for many of the segments and the script. Perfect cure on a rainy day.
